A Study on the Experience of Infidelity Counseling and Education Needs by Couple Therapists

Abstract
Objectives: This study was conducted to explore the experience of infidelity counseling and education needs by couple counselors and to suggest future directions for infidelity counseling and counselor education.

Methods: A total of seven couple counselors with infidelity counseling experience were interviewed in a focus group interview. The focus group interview took two and a half to three hours per session.

Results: Based on the data analysis, 40 themes, 10 subcategories, and two categories were drawn out from the infidelity experience and 40 themes, 12 subcategories, and three categories from the education needs. The participants¡¯ experiences have been shown as ¡°negative experience toward an extrovert,¡± ¡°difficulties in counseling intervention,¡± ''counselor's negative psychological experience,¡± ¡°positive experience in counseling intervention,¡± and ¡°growth through counseling experience.¡± Education needs have been identified as ¡°necessity of infidelity education and practicum,¡± ¡°counseling-related information,¡± and ¡°counselor-related information.¡±

Conclusions: Based on these results, suggestions were made on the direction of infidelity counseling education.
